"Strengthening of the educational level of the population of Kondo-Tshumbe. Democratic Republic of the Congo"

drcfingerprintCountry/ Geographic Area: Democratic Republic of Congo – Sub-Saharan Africa

Local Partner: Louise Lalu Dimandja

Project Duration: 12 month

Project Cofunder: The Nando Peretti Foundation

Overview

The Democratic Republic of Congo suffers from many shortcomings, one of them being a failing education system. The community of Kondo-Tshumbe, situated 80 km. from Lodja, has 61,353 inhabitants, most of who are school-age children and adolescents, and had only two schools. Children from other parts of the community are forced to walk a daily round trip of 14- 20 km to get to school, undertaken by very young children who often make the journey alone. Many girls, given the potential threat of being assaulted along the way, choose not to attend school. This is why we are working with Dr.Louise Lalu Dimandja and a private non-governmental initiative involving various inhabitants of the Kondo-Tshumbe community, parents and minor local authorities, who decided to respond to this situation by building a temporary school. They now need your help to replace this provisional building by a proper and permanent school.

Objective

American Initiatives is working with the Kondo-Tshumbe community to build a school with solid and non-perishable materials in order to guarantee the continuity of classes and the safety of pupils. The school will also be equipped with the appropriate chairs, desks and blackboards, in order to create a comfortable environment conducive to study. The new school will have the capacity to cater for the 335 pupils who currently attend the provisional school. In the long term, the aim is to start up a literacy program for women in the community, taking advantage of the school facilities.

This program addresses two main issues of the educational system in D.R. of Congo:

1.- Limited access to primary education.

2.- Poor school infraestructures and quality of education, education materials are often rare (if available at all), and as a result are very expensive.

Summary

This project seeks to improve the educational level of the population of Kondo-Tshumbe, to improve the of access to schooling and the standard of teaching offered to children in the rural area of Kondo Tshumbe. The project is focuses on two specific areas:
Replace the temporary building by constructing an adequate education center
Purchasing educational materials and equipment
